Sword Art Online II - Episode 5

Sinon finds out Kirito is a boy. Kirito enters his first match and learns how to use his sword. Death Gun quickly introduces himself to the new player.

Heh.

It's already too late for you, Sinon. You are well on your way to joining Kirito's 2nd Tier harem. Step 1 was for him to get you mad at him through no fault of his own. Step 2 was to tease you so frustratingly that you can't stop thinking about him. Step 3 and 4 will be some mix of saving your life or doing some sentimental thing for you, mixed with some more frustrating teasing, and Step 5 will be sitting around ALO with the other girls, quietly jealous of Asuna. In only half an hour, you're almost half-way through the Kirito Harem collection process.

I have to say, the comedy after Kirito outed himself as male had me grinning like an idiot. Sinon being mad, but more mad at the circumstances and her own carelessness, with Kirito following her around like a little puppy who was accidentally kicked.

Then Shino's friend showed up, game name Spiegel, and Sinon got even more frustrated because Kirito kept speaking politely like a girl. "Otoko desu." (I am a man.) Ha! Then boom! Kirito harem uppercut. "Well, since you invited me, I guess I'll have to make it to the finals." Har! Spiegel didn't like this familiar conversation with another guy at all. Not one bit.

I debated whether I should put Kirito meeting Death Gun after only one match in the meh section, but I'll allow that the story needs to keep moving quickly. Instead of making himself famous by winning a bunch of matches, he advertised that he was the Hero of the SAO survivors with his godly sword skills (in a gun match!) and his signature sword sheath move.

Now we know why the sword is so expensive, and why they have those bullet prediction lines. Leave it to Kirito the game breaker to figure out how to actually play this new game as a melee character. They tell you where the bullets are going to go. You just have to hit them with your light saber, er, beam sword, uh, thingy.

That Rogaine is really working on Mace Windu, but he's been spending too much time inside the Temple... Ahem.

Speaking of game breaking, I liked how Kirito brought back some his survival skills from SAO. Listening to the rhythm of the environment, and then locating the sound and movement that doesn't match. When stuff could kill you for real, and you were on a quest to save thousands of people's lives by clearing levels by yourself, these kinds of skills became second nature.

When is Kirito going to learn to triple wield? He's got to dual wield two swords at one point, right?

Kirito wanted some monies! Oh, he was tempted to put in his real info to qualify for prizes, because he's still a competitive gamer, but he wasn't there to play the game, and for all he knew, the deaths in real life happened because the victims' addresses were stored somewhere. Still, he believed he could win it all and get a bunch of loot.

Geh.

It's only a game, yet Sinon gets embarrassed over CGI underwear.

Well, games based on the Seed use the player's real world body as a template, and then randomize the features slightly, so people can't look any way the want. For all intents and purposes, Shino is standing in her underwear in front of Kirigaya. Once you know that, it's understandable how flustered and embarrassed Sinon acted with Kirito afterwards.

Hmm.

This appearance of Death Gun so quickly, while Spiegel was standing around looking at Sinon's match, threw out a bunch of great connections. That an SAO survivor would still recognize Kirito means they would have quested together, or even fought each other. Some things caught my attention though, besides the Laughing Coffin Player Killer Guild insignia. Death Gun's speech sounds almost like a text-to-speech cadence. This opens up a lot of possibilities about the actual avatar of Death Gun. It could be a bot being controlled by someone. Sinon mentioned that there are Japanese employees running the server locally. It also doesn't let Spiegel off the hook, since his avatar could just be standing in place ostensibly looking at a match, while he controls Death Gun.

The two things we know for sure are that whoever is controlling the Death Gun avatar knows Kirito from SAO, and that Kirito knows this person as well. The Laughing Coffin connection can mean this person has killed before, or is a devotee of player killing, and wanted to copy Laughing Coffin in a new game. No matter which game Kirito enters, he brings his history with him, whether that's his massive XP and stats, or the relationships from a game of death he defeated.
